Dual diagnosis of corona discharges and hot spots

Dual diagnosis in a single inspection

By combining the solar-blind ultraviolet channel with a radiometric thermal camera, the CoroCAM 8HD locates corona discharges and hot spots on the installation in the same pass, without repeating the inspection with two separate units.

High-resolution thermal channel

The vanadium-oxide microbolometer detector covers the 7.5 to 13.5 µm band, measures from -40°C to 160°C with an NEdT sensitivity below 62.5 mK, and offers 640×512 pixels with 15 configurable colour palettes and isotherms.

Certified ultraviolet sensitivity

The solar-blind ultraviolet channel detects emissions of up to 2.05×10-18 W/cm2 (3 pC at 20 m, IEC 60270:2000), with an optional Non-Solar-Blind mode of around 1×10-18 W/cm2 (0.8 pC at 15 m) for indoor or night-time inspection.

Synchronised zoom across all three channels

The 30x optical zoom of the visible channel is synchronised with the digital zoom of the ultraviolet and infrared channels, so all three always show the same field of view at the requested resolution.

Applications and functions

Applications

  • Joint inspection of corona discharges and hot spots on high-voltage substations.
  • Root-cause diagnosis of faults involving both corona effect and heating.
  • Demanding predictive maintenance for professional inspectors.
  • Technical documentation with environmental variables logged against each measurement.

Ultraviolet channel

Gain is set manually, while the threshold, integration and noise reduction optimise the image. The discharge is overlaid in 6 preset colour combinations or 100 user-selectable hues, with background priority and adjustable transparency.

Thermal channel

Focus, from 2.3 m to infinity, can be automatic or manual, with 8x digital zoom and a 10.4° × 8.3° field of view. Level and span are adjusted automatically or manually, and the operator can manually log distance, air temperature and pressure, humidity and wind speed for each measurement.

Visible channel and GPS

The 1920×1080-pixel sensor offers 0.1 lux in day mode and 0.05 lux in night mode, with automatic or manual focus from 1.5 m to infinity. Internal GPS with an external booster antenna geolocates every point inspected.

Software and post-processing

On-board recording

Still images, video and radiometric data in UCF format are automatically saved to the 64 GB or larger microSD card, together with the camera settings and the environmental variables logged by the operator.

Download and reporting

Material is downloaded via card reader or USB. The CoroBASE software, included as an accessory, organises the images, videos and radiometric data from each inspection to produce the report; no additional licence is required.

Grip and menus

The one-handed rotating grip and multi-function keypad switch between UV+visible, UV+infrared or each channel separately from an icon-based menu with 10 user profiles.
