Corona inspection from small drones, with the UV sensitivity of a full-size camera.

Product overview

Full corona sensitivity at drone weight

The CoroCAM UVS combines a solar-blind corona sensor with a Full HD visible camera in a 740 g housing that fits smaller gimbals. The UV channel works in the 240-280 nm band with a typical sensitivity of 5 × 10E-18 W/cm2, equivalent to 3.6 pC at 20 m, and its detector does not degrade over its life.

Wide field of view for close-up work

An 18° × 13.5° UV field of view, focus from 3 m to infinity and a visible channel with useful optical zoom from 24° to 4.5° let the drone work close to insulators and fittings and still resolve the detail of each defect.

Main features

  • Solar-blind UV (240-280 nm) and 1920 × 1080 visible channel, with optional 640 × 512 LWIR thermal module.
  • Setup via Bluetooth; remote control via SBUS, CAN or RS232 and Ethernet.
  • Live video over HDMI, composite or optional Wi-Fi; recording to micro SD card.
  • Powered from the UAV battery or an external 9-60 V supply, 12 W consumption.

Front, rear and side views: connectors and mounting points

  • Ready to inspect in 6 s and to record in 60 s.

Imaging and integration

Corona quantified, not just seen

Corona activity is measured by intensity-based count, calibrated for the irradiance value of the selected area. A threshold mask (useful range 20-100 %), UV transparency from 0 to 100 %, 4 false-colour presets with 100 user-selectable hues and adjustable integration — by period, summation or noise reduction — adapt the image to every scene.

Six display modes

UV+VIS, UV+LWIR, VIS only, LWIR only, UV only and UV priority, with UV overlay accuracy better than 1 mrad. The on-screen display shows gain, zoom, count and active functions.

Thermal on demand

The optional LWIR module adds 640 × 512 thermal imaging with sensitivity below 50 mK and automatic or manual level and span; depending on the module, the field of view is 32° × 26° or 24° × 19.2°.

Made for the aircraft

The camera is powered from the UAV battery — about 3 h on a 40 W battery — and runs continuously without overheating. Commands enter via SBUS, CAN or RS232 and Ethernet, live video leaves via HDMI, composite or optional Wi-Fi, and an internal GPS accepts an external antenna through the MCX connector.

Applications and operation

Applications

  • UAV corona surveys of overhead lines, insulators and substations in service.
  • Combined ultraviolet, visible and thermal inspection in a single flight with the optional module.
  • Close-up inspection with a wide field of view from smaller drones and gimbals.
  • Location of discharges on fittings, clamps and connections that are hard to reach from the ground.

Recording and data

Video and stills are stored on board on a micro SD card (64 GB supplied): AVI 720p with H.264 compression and JPG, more than 1000 images or over 1 h of video per GB. Files are downloaded with a card reader or over USB, and images are numbered for sorting; video can be listed and played back on the camera.

Setup and maintenance

Configuration is done on the ground over Bluetooth through an icon-based menu with 10 user profiles. The camera mounts horizontally (standard) or vertically (optional) using the 1/4-inch tripod thread and the M3 points, and the top plate can be adapted to each mounting. Firmware is updated by copying the update files to the micro SD card.
