What the Shark 100 measures, how accurate it is, and why it is so easy to fit in place of an analogue panel meter. Many panels still show voltage, current and power on separate analogue meters, and none of them records energy. The Shark 100 replaces them with a single meter of billing accuracy, fits the same panel openings and reuses the existing CT and PT wiring. Four figures sum it up: accuracy class 0.2, more than 400 samples per cycle with a 24 bit converter,

inputs up to 721 volts between phases, and 2500 volts of isolation. It measures voltage between phase and neutral and between phases, current, active, reactive and apparent power and energy, power factor and frequency. Voltage and current to 0.1% of reading; power and energy to 0.2. The front is designed to be read at a glance: Three lines of large red digits, lights that say which quantity is shown, and a load bar that keeps the feel of an analogue meter. Four keys do all the programming, and an infrared port on the

front lets a PC talk to the meter without opening the panel. The inputs are built for electrical environments that are not gentle. One universal voltage input works on 69 to 347 volt systems, with high isolation and surge withstand. And the current inputs cannot open a CT circuit: the lead can pass straight through the meter, or be terminated on robust pass-through bars. Functions come as upgrade keys, activated in the field without removing the meter.

V1 measures voltage and current. V2 adds power, power factor and frequency. V3 adds the energy counters and DNP3. And V4 adds harmonic distortion and limit alarms. Communication is as simple or as complete as the site needs. The infrared port on the front is standard. Optional cards add RS-485, with Modbus and DNP3, or 10 100 Base T Ethernet with Modbus TCP, and both include an energy pulse output.

The same meter fits a round ANSI 4 inch cut-out or a 92 millimetre square DIN cut-out, with little depth behind the panel. And where no display is needed, the Shark 100 T is the transducer version: on a DIN rail, with RS-485 as standard. It fits wherever energy and power have to be measured with confidence: utilities, buildings, industry and campuses, submetering, substations and power plants, and above all the direct replacement of analogue panel meters. In figures: Five amp or one amp C Ts, a universal or a low-voltage DC supply,

and operation from minus 20 to plus 70 degrees. Power network analysers, from Amperis.
