How the hydrogen area monitor is mounted, wired, powered up and tested. Before anything else: disconnect every power source and verify there are no live wires. This is a safety device, and it is meant to work alongside other protective systems, never as the only one. Hydrogen rises, so the monitor goes at the highest point of the room, cabinet or enclosure. It is an indoor device, and the manufacturer recommends ceiling mounting only.

There are 4 ways to mount it: a punch out, a standard junction box, a DIN rail, or a magnetic surface. The last two need the universal adapter plate kit. The tools are ordinary. What matters is the wiring: alternating current between 22 and 12 gauge, direct current between 14 and 20 gauge and no longer than 10 metres, and Modbus up to 1200 metres. All the terminals sit on the power board, split down the middle. Alternating current feeds through the large opening on one side,

direct current through the small one on the other. Keep them apart. It runs on alternating current, on direct current, or on both. When both are wired from separate sources, alternating current is the primary supply and the unit falls back to direct current on its own if that supply is lost. The analogue output is linear across the measuring range, and it also tells you when the unit is not measuring: zero milliamps if it has no power, two while it warms up, 3 on an error. Three relays. One at one percent, one at two percent, and a fault relay that is

energised while everything is healthy, so a power loss reads as a fault. Mechanically it is two parts. Wire the power board, screw it to the surface, then snap the sensor module onto it, lining up the pins. On power up, every indicator lights for 5 seconds and the buzzer chirps. Then it warms up for up to 6 minutes, with the green indicator flashing. Solid green means it is measuring. One infrared button does everything: a tap runs the self test or silences the buzzer,

5 seconds starts the communication test, 10 seconds resets the unit. The communication test proves the wiring without any gas. It walks through the one percent alarm, the two percent alarm and a fault, 5 seconds each, driving the relays, the analogue output and Modbus exactly as a real event would. Over Modbus, hydrogen arrives in parts per 1000000 as a 32 bit value: one percent is 10000, 2% is 20000. Status and errors have their own registers.

In service there is nothing to do. If you ever need to prove it with gas, there is a calibration shield and a bump kit. And remember the buzzer is local indication, not an evacuation alarm. Hydrogen area monitoring, from Amperis.
